| Description : | This is a lined, paper book with a light blue cover and 14 pages. The book is held together with two staples. "Exercise Book" and "Name" are printed on the front cover. Handwritten in the 'name' space is "School Atc. Sept 1949 - June 1950. October 1950 - June 1951" |
| Commentaires : | The Jannasch family helped establish the Makkovik mission in 1896, and started a boarding school there soon after. Many families did not live in communities, but were spread out along the coast to be nearer to fishing, hunting, and trapping resources. The boarding school was started for the children of these families, who attended the school from October to May or June each year. A more extensive boarding school was built in 1914. It was partially funded by the fees of 50 cents per month per child, and partially by charity groups in England. Later the boarding school became a day school, as most families in the surrounding area moved to Makkovik during the mid-twentieth century. In 1955, only a few years after this book was used, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador took over operation of the schools in Labrador. This book was kept by Reverend Harp, and left in the manse where it was salvaged by the museum in 1996. |
