| Description : | This artefact is a series of ivory pendants traditionally used as decoration on Inuit Silapaaqs. The ivory pendants are off white in color, teardrop in shape, and have been polished smooth. There is a small 1.5 mm hole drilled into the top of each pendant. This hole acts as an attachment point so the pendant can be sewn to the coat. All pendants are hand carved and as such very slightly in size and shape. |
| Commentaires : | Bone and ivory pendants have been known to have been in use by Inuit peoples from Baffin to Labrador. Similar objects have also been found in many Newfoundland Beothuk graves, leading some archaeologists to believe they were used in much the same fashion as the Inuit. The adornment of Inuit silapaaqs with such items has its origins in the use of spiritual amulets that were often attached to Inuit clothing to ensure protection or luck in the hunt. Such amulets were often attached to the back of clothing or on belts that were worn around the waist. |
