Description : This artifice is a British made postcard album. The album consists of a hard cover and 15 black pages. The pages have slits in them that allow the corners of the card to be inserted and held in place. The Front cover is off white in colour with an arrangement of maple leaves that boarder the upper left corner. The leaves have been embossed in to the paper and painted various shades of green and orange and outlined in gold. The paint used is of a high gloss. On the bottom right corner the words POST CARD ALBUM have been painted in a base of green with an over coat of gold paint which gives the effect of a shadowing of the text. In the top right corner hand written is A. Andersen, 1929. Inside the back cover appears a green that is 2 x 2.5 cm that reads BRITISH MADE - TO HOLD CARDS.
Commentaires : The postcard developed in Austria in the late 1860`s and were originally plain cards that were privately decorated and sent through the mail system. By 1870 picture postcards had become extremely popular and widely used. The hobby of collecting postcards largely began in the late 1800`s. Postcard manufactures issued series of collectable postcards, and albums for their storage developed as a response to the development of the hobby.
Fonctions : The album was owned by Andrea Andersen of Makkovik. Based on the hand written date of 1929 on the cover, it is assumed she began this collection when she was 17 years old. The album contained many postcards, a number of which were from one of her teachers, Miss Rowe. The album also contained a few photographs.
