Description : This artefact is a color postcard that depicts the Moravian Mission in Hebron. The postcard is printed on thick paper and the multi-coloured image depicts the Hebron Moravian Mission and its surrounding coast line landscape. Off the coast in the ocean is an iceberg. The dominant colours in the image are brown, green, blue and orange. In the upper left corner of the image is printed in black lettering "Moravian Mission HEBRON, Labrador." The reverse of the postcard is blank and white in colour. Printed in black lettering on the center of the back is the word "POSTCARD." The bottom right corner contains a printed black line that spans half of the reverse. The postcard has been produced by a technique known as chromolithography. Chromolithography was the first developed method for printing coloured images without the use of hand painting. Developed in Germany during the late 18th century it involved the application of coloured oil paints to a patterned plate which was then transferred to the desired article. Each colour was applied separately and the printing of one image required several passes through the plates.
Commentaires : The Hebron Mission postcard in one in a series of postcards developed by the Moravian Mission in the early 20th century for sale at the missions to travelers and tourists. The series was produced in England and manufactured in Germany. The cards would have been available at all missions along the Labrador coast at Okak, Nain, Hopedale, and Makkovik. The series included images of Nain, Hopedale, Okak, Hebron, and Killinek, as well as images of Icebergs, and dog teams and igloos. The cards are pre-First World War and likely produced c. 1906.
Fonctions : This postcard was one of a number of postcards that were contained in a collection owned by Andrea Andersen (1912-1986) who lived in Makkovik. The card has remained in the album in an unused state.
