Description : | This artifice is a washboard. It is constructed of a light coloured wood and corrugated glass. The washboard consists of two long upright posts to which a broad wooden header is attached. Between the uprights is a wood panel constructed of thin wood. On this panel is the remnant of a manufacture's mark. The mark has largely faded, but was printed in black ink, the remaining letters read ARE. Bellow the wood panel and separated by another wooden bar is a large section of corrugated glass. The glass is opaque and with the corrugation running perpendicular to the uprights. |
Commentaires : | The washboard was the common clothes washing implement used in Newfoundland and Labrador prior to the affordability of electric washers. 19th Century washboards were often constructed completely of wood though a fluted metal washboard appeared in the United States around 1833. Most 20th century boards were made of galvanized steel, though corrugated glass was also used in later period boards. |
Fonctions : | This washboard belonged to Mary E. Andersen. Mary continued to use the washboard for sock even after she purchased an electric washer. The washboard was used in conjunction with a metal was basin. |
