Commentaires : Tuberculosis claimed a large number of lives in Newfoundland and Labrador during the late 19th and early 20th century. The hospital in St. Anthony was one of the main areas of treatment for tuberculosis for Labrador and the north coast of Newfoundland. The St. Anthony hospital was established by Dr. Wilfred Grenfell in 1905. Grenfell came to Newfoundland in 1892 as part of a mission to investigate the living conditions of deep sea fishermen involved in the Labrador fishery. Grenfell was greatly concerned by the living conditions he witnessed. He returned the following summer with a medical team to treat the residents of Labrador. He returned every summer for the same purpose. In 1899 he stayed in Newfoundland permanently, wintering in St. Anthony, where he built a number of institutions to help the residents.
Fonctions : This book belonged to Viola Andersen of Makkovik who died at 14 years of age in 1947. Viola spent time in the St. Anthony hospital because of Tuberculosis. She was given this book, on her 14th birthday. She died four months later.
