Description : | Each printing block consists of a rectangular wooden block with a printing plate for reproducing a photograph on one side, and a black and white image of the end product on the other side. The printed image shows the church at Makkovik and two other buildings in the community. |
Commentaires : | This printing block is from a collection of the Moravian Archives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The Moravian Archives collects records relating to the Moravian Church in the United States and Canada. They donated these printing blocks to the museum. These printing blocks likely use photo lithography to print the image. In this process, a positive image has been created on the printing plate using photosensitive emulsion and a photographic negative. Resulting from this process, the portions of the plate that make up positive areas of the image (ex. the black areas and writing in this particular image) have emulsion on them, while the negative (or white) areas do not. When water is applied to the printing plate, it is repelled by the emulsion, and only covers blank portions of the plate (the negative portions of the image). When a special type of water-repellent ink is then applied, it only adheres to the areas of the plate without water (in other words, to the areas covered with emulsion). In this way, only the positive areas of the image are inked and will print. |
