Description : | This Artefact is an early 20th century slide projector. The projector is made of a metal casing that has been painted black. This casing houses the light source and the slide port. It is vented by way of a number of circular holes cut into the side of the case. At the front the casing houses a large glass lens. Attached to the front of the casing directly in front of the lens is an expandable, accordion style arm that houses the focusing lens. The expansion section of the arm has been made of fabric covered cardboard and is attached to the main body by two smooth sliding metal rods. The unit has a brown electrical cord running from underneath the main body. The unit is mounted on the bottom of the carrying case which has been made from wood covered in black leather. The case top covers the unit completely and is held in place by two brass swinging latches. |
Commentaires : | This slide projector, or 'magic lantern,' as the company who produced it called it, was manufactured in 1927 by the Bausch & Lomb Optical Company. The company was formed in 1853 under the name of J. J. Bausch, Optician. Busch partnered with Lomb in 1864 and by 1875 had started manufacturing a number of optical instruments, including micro-scopes. The company eventually branched out into electric slide projectors. The Balopticon projector took its name from the initials of their company name. Purchased by the Moravian Mission in Makkovik after the fire that destroyed their building in 1948, this slide projector had a number of community uses. A resident of the town who attended the boarding school remembered Rev. Harp showing slides on such a projector for topics such as geography, health, and religion. On Wednesday evenings he used to have a slide show for the general public. At Christmas students would write letters to Santa and take them up to the "powder house". This was a building where they stored the ammunition for making bullets. The resident remembers seeing a slide of Santa at the "powder house" supposedly collecting their letters. |
