Description : Three-panelled oil painting of Samuel de Champlain meeting with Ouendat people. Upright rectangular panels show, from left to right people performing fishing and other everyday tasks, a dialogue between a bearded European man wearing a feathered hat and doublet and two seated and one standing First Nations individuals. Behind the first European is another European man wearing a shirt and breeches, holding a length of red cloth. To the right is the King's Coat of Arms for Louis XIII of France, followed by, at extreme right, a full-length portrait of Champlain ? wearing a breastplate, doublet, red cape and blue chest belt.
Commentaires : Artwork was originally commissioned by the Hotel Champlain in Orillia, Ontario of Kenneth Dawson, artist based in Toronto. The Hotel Champlain was located at 2 Front St., near the waterfront. The costuming depicted for the Ouendat people has significant inconsistencies when compared with historic records. Kenneth Dawson was known for his painted murals, some of which were created for the Canadian Pacific Railway's Montreal Station, Pearson International Airport's Terminal One, and other businesses and organizations. He was also reported to have worked frequently with another mural artist, Harold Town.
