| Description: | A wooden basket made of thin wood, upright pieces are held in place with a band of wood around the bottom stapled to the base, at the top there is a band of wood on the inside and outside stapled together. A wooded handle in U shape starts on one side at the bottom comes up over the top and down to the bottom on the opposite side, handle is stapled to the basket. |
| Narrative: | James Waddell(1787-1870) was born in Lesmahagow, Scotland. He came to New Brunswick circa 1825. He started a small saw mill in Smyden Brook on the hill across from the ferry landing. Eventually he built a larger mill at the rivers edge. He married Margart Brodie and they had seven children.He also operated a grist mill and store. The saw mill was powered by a water wheel 30 feet in diameter. Water was brought by sluice from Waddell lake, about 1 1/2 miles away. In 1908 the water wheel was replaced by a steam engine. Also, the gang(?) saw blades were replaced by rotary saws. James son, James Waddell II built a furniture and mecantile factory near the mill as well as a blacksmith shop, trim for many homes was made here. Much of the wood used to rebuild Saint John after the Great Fire was ordered from the Waddell mill. The family business passed from James II to his son James E. Waddell and then to his son Lorne Waddell. The mill burned in 1950. Much of the artifacts in the Lorne and Doris Waddell collection are from the mill and factory, including lamps, chisels, mallets and examples of trim. Also a berry box maker and various other tools. |
