Description : | The oakum consists of tarred rope fibres, and in this case is spun into strands and wrapped around a spool. |
Commentaires : | Oakum refers to tarred rope fibres. It was used to caulk the boat seams in order to prevent leakage. Oakum is made from hemp or other rope fibres treated with pine tar. It was spun into rope-like lengths and driven into the seams between the planks of a boat. The oakum used in Winterton boat building was not locally produced, but rather was imported by merchants. |
Fonctions : | Oakum such as this would have been used to caulk boat seams in Winterton in the twentieth century. |
