Description : | The strop is composed of leather in a rectangular shape and an ovoid projection at the end. One end of the leather is stitch over an open hanging hook made of steel. One side of the leather is polished/tanned while the other side is rough/raw in nature. |
Fonctions : | The strop was used to sharpen the straight razor, known as "stroping" a razor. When sharpening a blade, the strop would be hung via the suspension ring and held tight via the ovoid projection. When sharpening the razor the blade is pushed towards the suspension ring on the rough side of the leather strop. When reaching the end of the leather the razor would be turned clockwise about its back until the cutting edge touches the strop. It is then pulled toward the rectangular end of the strop with back and cutting edge flat on the strop. The blade is moved in a slightly diagonal movement so that all areas of the blade are in contact with the strop. The smooth side is used for blade alignment and sharpening |
