Description : | Portrait of Sir Mayson Beeton. |
Fonctions : | Mayson Beeton first traveled to Newfoundland in 1903. He traveled the Exploits River and found the area at Grand Falls to be a suitable site to establish a paper mill. Upon returning to England, he informed the Harmsworth brothers of his find. One year later, Alfred C. Harmsworth returned to Newfoundland with Beeton to evalutate the site first hand. Harmsworth was impressed and after some opposition and negotiation the Anglo Newfoundland Development Company was incorporated on January 7, 1905. The act to operate was not passed until June 13th. In July, Mayson Beeton returned to the Grand Falls to oversee the surveying for the mill, dam, and town site. Sir Mayson Beeton , as he later came to be called, was the first president of the A.N.D. Company and made many trips back to Grand Falls throughout his remaining years. |
