Description : | The compass is in a circular, brass-coloured, metal case. The lid is a flat metal disk. The background of the compass is white, with black labelling indicating the eight cardinal points, and with small black lines marking increments between these points. There is a black star at the top of the north point. |
Commentaires : | This compass belonged to George Roberts, and was used to guide him from Fortune to Bay d'Espoir in a small, open dory. Roberts' son Joshua learned to navigate using this compass. Small pocket compasses, like this one, were often used in dories, and are sometimes referred to as dory compasses. Those made near the end of the nineteenth century often have lids that press on, like this one does, as opposed to threaded lids used earlier in the century. Marks and residue around the edge of the glass face on this compass show where a bezel ring once held the glass in place. |
Fonctions : | This compass was used for navigation in a small boat. |
