Description : This cylindrical metal stove stands on three legs. The base and top of the stove are slightly wider than the body, and are painted black. Holes are cut through the body near the top of the stove in a decorative pattern.
Commentaires : This heater belonged to Jerry Strickland of Milltown, and was donated by Ann Strickland. Its small size made it portable, so it could have been moved as required. This would have been useful when heat was needed in rooms that were generally unheated. For example, it could have been moved into a bedroom if someone were ill. In the mid-twentieth century, kerosene, which had earlier been used to fuel smaller items like lanterns and irons, began to replace both wood and coal as a heating fuel in Newfoundland, and kerosene stoves were found in homes across the province. General Steel Wares was formed in 1927 when six companies that manufactured stoves and kitchen items united. These companies, all from Ontario and Quebec, were the McClary Manufacturing Company in London, the Happy Thought Foundry in Brantford, the Sheet Metal Products Company of Canada Limited in Toronto, E. T. Wright Limited in Hamilton, the Thomas Davidson Manufacturing Company Limited in Montreal, and A. Aubry et fils Limitée in Montreal. It is not known at which of these locations this heater was manufactured.
Fonctions : This heater was used for providing heat, and was most likely used in the home.
