Description : | The grindstone is a cement disk with a hole through its middle. A rectangular wooden bar is inserted through this hole, and held in place by a nail. On both ends the wooden bar is rounded and thinner. This is where the grindstone would have rested on a frame, and the rounded shape would have allowed the stone to turn smoothly. A wooden handle is attached at a ninety degree angle to one end of the bar. |
Commentaires : | This grindstone was handmade on August 26, 1935 by an unknown person in Milltown-Head Bay d-Espoir, and was donated to the museum by Lloyd Kearley. It would likely have rested in a homemade wooden frame. To use the grindstone, one would keep the stone wet, turn the handle to rotate the stone, and hold the blade to be sharpened against the rotating stone. Sometimes this was a two person job, with one person turning the handle and keeping the stone wet, while the other held the blade against the stone. |
Fonctions : | This grindstone was used for sharpening metal objects, such as axes and knives. |
