Description : Areas of concern and polluted areas of CanadaÍs precious Great Lakes are illustrated on this map.
Commentaires : This two-page map from 1990-91 succinctly illustrates areas of concern, hot spots for hazardous waste sites and discharge that flowed into the Great Lakes. The data represented on the map was compiled from the findings of an Environment Canada research boat, which set out to analyze water samples taken from the Great Lakes. They found that, while it seemed the health of the Great Lakes was on an upswing, these large bodies of water, which account for 1/5 of the worldÍs freshwater, were still heavily polluted. The article recounts how the Lakes became polluted from the influx of 17th century European settlers dumping raw sewage into them to chlorinating drinking water rather than mitigating pollution in the 1950s to modern day issues.
