Commentaires : In Upper Canada the judges of The Court of the King's Bench, based in the provincial capital, York, presided over the assizes held once a year in the capitals of the, by 1821, 11 outlying administrative districts. Aside from the Home District assizes, which were usually held in April, the other districts were visited by the judges between the spring and fall. These assizes were organized into an eastern and western circuit, with the judges sharing the assize duties, often taking turns on the two circuits. Civil cases were argued before the judge alone, whereas in criminal cases he was accompanied on the bench by associate judges chosen from the local magistracy. For example, in 1825 Chief Justice Campbell began the western circuit in Sandwich (Windsor) on August 1st, finishing at Niagara (Niagara-on-the-Lake) on September 16th . (This information is from Campbell's entry in The Dictionary of Canadian Biography.)
