Description : | reproduction having a round convex base; supporting a vertical, open spiral cylinder; small solid cylinder inside spiral, with handle protruding out of spiral, coiled at end |
Commentaires : | Candles such as this were probably used throughout settlers' homes and in the kitchens of wealthier homes. The small solid cylinder inside the spiral was used to raise the candle as it burned. Candles were usually made at home in the autumn, and were produced either by dipping wicks into melted tallow or by running tallow into moulds. Wax candles were imported from England, and described in one advertisement in Upper Canada in the 1830s as 'London moulded candles'. The best candles that could be bought were made of spermaceti wax (found in the head of the toothed whale), for these were white, translucent, and burned brightly. Such candles were commonly advertised in Upper Canada well before 1820. Source: Minhinnick, Jeanne, "At Home in Upper Canada". Clarke, Irwin & Company Limited, Toronto, 1983, p.161-2. |
