Description : Regency gilt wood convex wall mirror having a moulded circular frame with leaf spray and eagle or phoenix surmount, flanked by scrolled candle-holders with sphinx or Britannia head terminals
Commentaires : A convex mirror such as this may have hung over the fireplace mantel in the dining room, and would have provided the butler with a view of the entire room at once from his vantage point near the servery doors.

"Circular convex glasses, in the words of Thomas Sheraton (1803), 'strengthen the colour and take off the coarseness of objects by contracting them'. They had been made in Nuremberg from the 15th century and are occasionally depicted in manuscripts of that time. .. Such glasses enjoyed popularity in the 18th century, when they were being made in France and perhaps also in England. Designs for framed convex mirror's were given by William Ince and John Mayhew in their 'Universal System of Household Furniture (c. 1762). By the early years of the 19th century , the British Cast Plate Glass Company was making convexes and a particular type of frame became standard. It consists of a deeply curved gilt wood moulding in which a series of gilt balls are fixed at equal intervals, while between this and the glass there is a narrow ebonized ring. The whole is usually surmounted by an eagle holding in its beak a chain from which a ball is suspended, and at the base there is a series of leaves from which spring a pair of arms with candle-holders."
