Fonctions : This hat belonged to Captain Martin Gilbert Dalton M.B.E (1889-1965) who was Marine Superintendant of the Coastal Boat Service from 1924 to 1955 when he retired. He was instrumental in rescuing the survivors of the Florizel in 1917 when he single-handedly rowed a dory back and forth between the wreck of the Florizel and shore taking one passenger after another to safety. In 1937, he was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and was awarded a medal for his public service.
