Commentaires : This Painting depicts the recovery of a captured German Panzer Tank from the rubble of Coiano Ridge by Members of the 8th Princess Louise's New Brunswick Hussars, September 1944. Only one day of rest was possible for the Hussars following the break through on the Gothic Line. Vehicles were repaired and replenished and replacements for the casualties are brought forward. The following morning the Regiment assembled just south of the Conca River and shook out along the road leading to Misano Ridge. They waited in vain for the chance to fight as many delays were experienced by the lead units of the 5th Armoured Brigade before Misano Ridge was secured At dawn on 04 September, the Hussars and the Westministers formed up behind Misano Ridge and jumped off the start line at 0600 hrs, recce troop and B Squadron leading. Within minutes, it was evident that the German positions were fully manned and established in depth. Vicious gun battles erupted with B Squadron pinned down far out in front. Casualties were mounting steadily and it was evident that the goal of reaching the Mesano River would not be possible until the strong defences on Coriano Ridge were destroyed. It was the strongest enemy force in terms of men and weapons the Hussars had ever faced. As the tanks were pulled back behind what was to become know as Graveyard Hill, other efforts were being made to rescue stranded crews and injured crewman. Some were not to be rescued for six more days. After a 4 day pause the individual Squadrons tied up with their respective infantry unit, under cover of darkness; A Sqn (Gordon Bruce) with the Perth Regiment, B Sqn (Tim Ellis) with the Cape Breton Highlanders and C Sqn (Cliff McEwen) with the Irish Regiment. The crossing between Graveyard Hill and Coriano Ridge would be done in darkness, A and B Sqns leading with C in reserve. At 0530 hrs the south crossing was ready for the tanks and they advanced to close up to the Perths but the north crossing was delayed for many hours and B Sqn could not assist the Cape Bretoners yet. By 0900 hrs the Irish Regiment reported they were through the town and the Hussars C Sqn was ordered to attack Point 102 in the center of Coriano. The German defenders fought back. A company of the Irish Regiment were cut-off and surrounded. C Sqn was ordered to assist. As they advanced in the center of town they too were trapped. Major McEwen advanced into the center of town on foot and established a rescue plan for his trapped tanks. With skill, perseverance and mounting casualties, the Hussars removed their trapped Shermans. By dusk they were backstopping their individual infantry regiments again, and A Echelon under command of Captain Jack Boyer was called forward to re-supply the Sherman's and their exhausted crews. On 14 Sep, the Hussars had two tasks. B Sqn took on the task of supporting the British and they advanced up over Coriano Ridge and laid down smoke to cover their advance. This resulted in very accurate return fire and casualties. By 0800 hr the British forces had cleared the next ridge and both A and B Sqn spent time looking for targets of opportunity. Meanwhile C Sqn was supporting the Irish in clearing the town. Building by building was cleared until 1400 hrs when the last of the German forces were surrounded in the castello. Tank fire smashed the walls and the Irish attacked. The last surviving Germans surrendered and the battle for Coriano Ridge was finished.
