Description : WWII Military equipment, Haversack and straps. Khaki canvas Haversack with two ;L; shaped equipment straps. Brass metal fittings. Printed on back "G177", "CU713" ,"Sgt.Prosser EN MD7".
Commentaires : These items belonged to Sgt. Everett Prosser. He enlisted in Saint John NB in 1940, with the 4th Canadian Motorcycle Regiment, otherwise known as the 8th Princess Lousie NB Hussars. Overseas he qualified as a driver I.C. (W) Class III and driver operator (C). Promoted to SGT. and served as Troop Sgt. in the U.K., Italy and North-West Europe. Returned to Canada in January 1946.
Fonctions : Haversack constructed of pre-shrunk canvas. Was very durable and practical. Was used to accommodate a different and more mechanized role and the need for expanded ammunition requirements. For infantrymen, the basic rectangular-shaped ammunition pouches could contain box magazines for the Bren light machine gun, hand grenades or rifle ammunition in standard charger clips or stowed encased in cloth bandoliers. Kitted for full marching order, the valise was worn on the back with the haversack worn on the left hip. When in Battle Order the large pack was detached and the small pack attached to the back, connected by short L shaped straps to the front pouches, and for musketry order, the haversack was removed with just pouches, braces, water bottle and bayonet frog used. The arrangement for officers had a pistol holster, ammunition and compass pouches, binoculars case and other components substituted as well as there being a variety of other supplementary items used by other specialists for their particular roles. The 1937 pattern served soldiers throughout the duration of the war and was replaced in 1958. (Imperial War Museum)
