| Description : | This artefact is a merchant fleet flag. The flag is rectangle in shape and is constructed from red, white, and blue bunting. The field is red with a small rectangular British union flag in the upper left corner. The main body of the flag consists of two sections of red material that has been sewn together. The union flag consists of numerous sections of cloth stitched together to form the flag. The union flag has then been stitched to the main flag. The left hand edge has been reinforced by a white material. On this edge in both corners are two metal grommets, which form the attachment point for the flag to the ship. The flag is stained and the right edge has frayed with use. |
| Commentaires : | The Red Ensign was flown on English war ships as early as 1620. The flag consisted of a red field with St George's cross in the upper left hand corner. By 1674 the Red Ensign was approved for use on all English ships both naval and merchant. The 1701 Act of Union with Scotland and 1801 Act of Union with Ireland saw the addition of each nation's flag to the Red Ensign, resulting in a red field with the British Union flag in the upper left corner. By 1864 the Red Ensign was designated for use by the merchant navy only. The Red Ensign was adopted for use on land by merchantmen in British colonies who had obtained a special Admiralty Warrant. The Red Ensign was unofficially adapted my many colonies through the application of a crest to the red field. Newfoundland ships flew their own unofficial version of the Red Ensign between 1904 and 1930. The flag was similar to the Official Ensign but included a crest that depicted Mercury, Britannia, and a fisherman surrounded by the motto "Haec Tibi Dona Fero," which translated as "These Gifts I bring Thee. |
