Description : | This artefact is a pair of ice tongs. Made of two 'S' shaped forged pieces of iron these tongs are held together by a loose rivet that also acts as the tongs pivot point. Each section is made up of an oval hand grip that sweeps down and out into a large hook. The end of each hook is bent sharply back 90 degrees and filed to a point. These points, when closed together, serve to grip the block of Ice for ease of movement. |
Commentaires : | Although resources such as cod, salmon, seal, and duck were plentiful in Battle Harbour prior to the decline of the cod stocks, resources such as fresh water and timber were always scarce. Though water was scarce, there was limited access to it. The Baine Johnston Company built one of their buildings over an access to fresh water, which was kept in a cistern below the building. This Building was later given to the Grenfell Mission by Baine Johnston for use as their hospital. The limited access to fresh water and thus ice production meant that ice was at times shipped in from North Sidney. The nature of the salmon industry and the need to package it fresh meant that there was always a demand for ice. |
Fonctions : | Used to move ice around during a number of tasks, including the packing and preservation of Salmon. |
