Description : This artefact is a collection vat used in the processing of Cod Oil. The vat is broad and cylindrical narrowing sharply at one end. The narrow end has an opening into which a valve has been threaded. The valve is of cast iron with a 'C' shaped pivoting leaver. At the broad end of the valve and covered by the pivoting leaver is a thin brass washer. The body appears to be of a rolled galvanised sheet metal and has been constructed in two sections. The cylindrical section has been rolled into shape and closed by welding the free edges to each other. The funnel section of the vat has been constructed in the same manned and has been welded to the bottom of the cylinder. The broad end of the vat has been capped by iron band that runs its entire circumference.
Commentaires : At one point there were three of these vats in a processing building in Battle Harbour. All three were aligned on the floor with the funnel section protruding through the floor in to a collection space below. They may have been used for steaming the oil a process that produced higher grade oil with fewer impurities. This process was introduced to Battle Harbour by the Earle Company in the 1950's.
Fonctions : This item was used in the refining of cod oil to separate oil from impurities.
