Description : This artefact is an iron hook used in the seal fishery. The hook is comprised of a solid iron bar that has been bent into shape to provide at one end an oval handle and at the other a tapered hook.
Commentaires : Battle Harbour is an area that was rich in wildlife from salmon around the island, to black duck flocks on Gunning Island. As an island Battle Harbour was situated right on the fishing ground and its harbour saw the passage of seal herds in the late winter and early spring. Sealing in Battle Harbour was conducted by way of net in the local area, as opposed to the deployment of sealers to the northern ice flows that was common in Newfoundland. A large 10 to 12 inch net was placed at the mouth of the harbour that ensnared the seals as they passed. Once full the net was hauled ashore by men who sold their catch to the local merchant.
Fonctions : The seal cat was used to pull seal carcases aboard a boat or on to a wharf from seal nets. It was also used in the handling of seal pelts during their processing.
