Commentaires : | The St. John Ambulance Association emerged in Britain in 1877 from the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, and was inaugurated to train men and women for helping the sick or injured, as well as to provide trained civilians to reinforce the medical department of the army. The St. John Ambulance Brigade was formed in 1887, and had a Nursing Division whose members were women instructed in Home Nursing by Registered Nurses. This consisted of a six week course during which members of the Nursing Division, as well as other interested citizens, were taught how to care for the sick at home. The idea behind this was to have a group of women who were able to step in when regular nursing services needed extra help, such as during wartime. The courses were taught on a regular basis, both to train new members, and to re-certify existing members. This book is the textbook for the course. The first Home Nursing textbook was published in 1880. This particular book is the fourth edition, which contained expanded information on infectious diseases and surgical nursing, and was originally compiled from the manuscript of the late Mildred Heather-Bigg. The book begins with an outline of the topics that would be covered during six lectures in a home nursing course, based on material covered in the book. The book is divided into 18 chapters and two appendices. The chapters are: The Home Nurse; Structure and Functions of the Body; The Roller Bandage and its Application; The Sick-Room; Ventilation and Warming; The Bed; Nursing Requisites; The Daily Routine; Observation of the Sick; Food; Beverages and Invalid Cookery; Methods of Treatment; External Applications; Infection and Disinfection; Specific Infectious Diseases; Surgical Nursing - Wounds; Sick Children; Convalescence. The appendices are Milk Regulations and Last Offices or Care of the Dead. The book has 61 illustrations depicting various aspects of the text, such as how to bandage various parts of the body, how to make a bed so that it has "envelope corners," how to organize a sick room, and what various instruments, such as thermometers and inhalers, look like. This particular copy was owned by Barbara Gibbs Fitzgerald, a Registered Nurse who lived in St. John's. |
