Description : The front cover of this navy hardcover book is blank. The title and author are printed on the spine in gold-coloured lettering.
Commentaires : This book has 341 pages divided into three parts. Part 1 is titled Ethics, Part 2 is the Art of Conduct, and Part 3 is Points and Papers for Discussion. The 29 chapters of the book include the following: What Determines the Goodness or Evil of an Action, The End or Purpose of Human Activities, To Whom are We Accountable, The Cardinal Virtues Prudence Justice Temperance and Fortitude, Our Duties Toward God, Our Duties Toward Ourselves, The Nurse's Loyalty and Honor, The Intellectual Qualities of the Nurse, The Nurse's Conduct Toward Her Patient, The Nurse's Voice, The Nurse's Dress, and The Nurse and Marriage. The book has an image of Aristotle inside the front cover. Father Edward F. Garesche, the author of this book, was a Jesuit Priest and published poet who founded the Queen's Work magazine. He was instrumental in establishing the International Catholic Guild of Nurses in 1924 and the Catholic Medical Mission Board in 1927. Beginning in 1927 he was the spiritual director of the Guild of Nurses, and he directed the Catholic Medical Mission Board from 1929 until he passed away in 1960. Father Garesche wrote numerous books on the Catholic faith. This particular book was owned and used by Barbara Gibbs while she was attending nursing school at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City. St. Vincent's Hospital was opened in 1849 by the Sisters of Charity New York. It is a Catholic hospital that still trains nurses and doctors today. The book was donated to the museum by Barbara Fitzgerald, daughter of Barbara (Gibbs) Fitzgerald.
