Description : These scalers have flattened, rectangular heads attached to a cylindrical neck that widens closer to the handle. One head angles away from the neck and handle, while the other head is in line with the handle. Both handles are textured with small raised dots. Each handle has two small protuberances near the bottom of the textured area. The lower portion of the handle is untextured with a slightly wider, flat end.
Commentaires : These scalers were used and donated by Dr. Nigel Francis Scarth Rusted. Dr. Rusted was born in Salvage, Newfoundland in 1907. He graduated from Memorial College in 1927, and continued his studies at Dalhousie University, where he obtained a B.Sc. in 1929, and an M.D. in 1933. Dr. Rusted began his medical career in the summers of 1930 and 1931 as the Health Officer on board the S.S. Kyle on the coast of Labrador. After graduation, he worked at the General Hospital in St. John's from 1933 to 1935. He then spent a year on the M.V. Lady Anderson, bringing medical treatment to patients along the southwest coast of Newfoundland. Returning to St. John's in 1936, he set up his own practice and was appointed junior surgeon at the General Hospital. From 1949 to 1966 he was the medical director, chief surgeon and chief of staff at the Grace General Hospital in St. John's, and from 1954 to 1968 was also the chief of the division of surgery at the General Hospital. In 1968, Dr. Rusted was appointed clinical professor of surgery at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He retired in 1987, after first receiving an honorary D.Sc. from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1973. He is an avid collector of medical history and has a large collection of material. He also established the Dr. Nigel Rusted Lectureship in Humanities. He has received fellowships in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, and the International College of Surgeons. During his time on the S.S. Kyle and the M.V. Lady Anderson, Dr. Rusted visited communities with very little access to medical services. Some communities had a resident nurse, but others had no professional medical help other than Dr. Rusted's visits. When the medical ship arrived in a harbour, patients would come on board to be examined and treated. The doctor would also make home visits for those who were too ill to come to his "office" on the ship. He dealt with a wide variety of medical conditions, and dentistry, particularly tooth extraction, was a common one. These dental instruments would thus have been an important part of his medical equipment.
Fonctions : These scalers were used for removing plaque, tartar and stains from patients' teeth.
