Description : Oval in shape has scalloped edges. Handle on each end. Filigree pattern on tray. This silver platter was presented as a gift to the Right Honorable Lord Beaverbrook in 1948, the year succeeding when he became Chancellor of the University of New Brunswick (UNB). Inscribed in the filigree decorated platter are the names of the institution's Senate members at the time, as well as a short statement describing the birthday occasion for the gift. Lord Beaverbrook was born in Maple, Ontario on May 25th, 1879 as William Maxwell "Max" Aitken. His family soon moved to Newcastle, New Brunswick where Aitken would always refer to as "home". At the age of thirteen, Aitken published his first newspaper though he only went on to briefly pursue formal higher education at UNB. In the following years, Aitken moved to England to build a newspaper empire and in 1911, Acland Hood offered him knighthood "for the purpose of rewarding (him) for services to come and to the Unionist Party." (Chisholm and Davie, 1992) Though many questioned this decision, one could not deny Aitken was wealthy enough to be in the position to give great sums of money to the party. In 1916, the name 'Beaverbrook' was instated in addition to the title 'Lord'. The origin of this name is unclear, though it is thought that Aitken may have either picked it from a map or from a location where he used to go fishing as a boy. After the Second World War, Lord Beaverbrook served as Chancellor of UNB and became the greatest benefactor of the Universtiy, the City of Fredericton, and the Province of New Brunswick. He was succeeded as Chancellor by his son, Sir Max Aitken and in turn by Lady Violet Aitken (wife of Max Aitken), who served until 1993.
