Description : | This is a primitive Hurricane lamp. It has a clear glass chimney with a beaded rim. The circular base is thin metal. There is a small metal cup attached to the base to hold a standard sized taper candle. Two springs are attached to the base. Attached to the springs is a metal wire that is bent in a rectangular shape. The wire is bent to go straight up either side of the glass chimney and straight across the top. This can be raised to permit the insertion of the glass chimney and lowered to secure the chimney. It is bent so that the "corners" form loops to which are attached the ends of another wire that is shaped in an inverted U. The rounded bottom (top) forms the handle of the lamp. |
Commentaires : | This type of lamp was often used for night trips to the outhouse and the barn. This item is placed in the Kent collection since in its early years, W. J. Kent & Co. Ltd. would have sold this type of lamp. |
Fonctions : | This lamp came from the estate of Lyla Ramsay-Gallagher of Bathurst, N.B. Lyla passed away on May 30, 2009 at the age of 75. |
