Artiste ou artisan : Dr. Isaak Fanous
Rôle de l'autre artiste : Dr. Isaac Fanous started his career as an architect. He was one of the first students in the Institute of Coptic Studies, Cairo, Egypt which was founded in 1954. He earned a Phd from this institute in 1968. He did further studies in France at Ecole du Louvre with special focus on icons & icons restoration under the famous Russian iconographer & iconologiist Leonid Ouspensky. This was later followed with studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy. He was a professor & Chair of the Coptic Arts Dept. at the Institute of Coptic Studies until his passing away. Dr. Fanous is the founder of the Neo-Coptic School of Iconogrphy. This has earned him the name of "Fr of Neo-Coptic Iconography". His style intermingles Pharaonic, Byzantine & Coptic Art in modern form. His icons reflect the cultural & spiritual heritage of the Coptic Orthodox Church. He believed that the artist must be rooted in his/her heritage & create a living art that is also universally understood. His legacy to Copt

Description : Iconic painting depicting St. Mark the Apostle in a white tunic with a red cape and gold coloured halo. St. Mark is holding a book in his hand that is greyish coloured with a cross that is outlined in black.The background is yellow ocre.There is a lion that is grayish black at St. Mark's feet. The frame is gold-coloured wood.
Commentaires : When Fr. Marcos Marcos was commissioned to minister to the Copts in Noth America (1964), His Grace the late Bishop Samuel of the Coptic Orthodox Church's Bishopric of Public, Social & Ecumenical Services, requested Dr. Fanous to write this icon together with five other icons for the first Coptic Orthodox Church in North America.The Museum's Reference Library includes publications on Dr. Fanous, prints of many of his icons & books & articles and other documents about his lifes work.
