| Rôle de l'autre artiste : | Marguerite Nakhla was born in Alexandria, Egypt. She was recognized as the leading Egyption painter between 1935 & 1975. In 2007 she was recognized as one of the 12 pioneers from Alexandria in the arts in the 20th century. She sought to express her art in diverse styles but is mostly recognized for her particular Impressionist & Expressionist styles. She was prolific painter who lived her art. The Museum has been able to identify 300 of her canvases & photographed 80 of them. She was sid to have an unrivalled ability & an ingenious gift to paint "crowds". The majority of her paintings always depict people in motion. Her series of biblical scenes in Coptic Folkloric style was noted for bringing together the best of ancient Coptic style with the best of modern art. The Museum is the only museum in the world to display the biblical scenes by Marguerite Nakhla. |

| Description : | Coptic folkloric painting depicting the Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1-13). The virgins are wearing tunics of different shades of red and white head scarves. The virgins on the left are holding gold leaf "lit" lamps. The lamps of the virgins on the right are not lit. The sky above the virgins on the left is gold leaf and the sky about the virgins on the right is blue with gold lear stars. The writing above the door is in Arabic from verse 12 of the parable which states "..you not know the day or the night when the Son of Man is coming". |
| Commentaires : | The Museum has published a booklet about Ms. Nakhlas life and works titled "Coptic Treasure, The Gifts of Marguerite Nakhla" (2005). Published conference papers on this series of Ms. Nakhla's folkloric biblical scenes, power point presentations on her works, a collection over 80 digital photographs, newspaper articles, exhibition catalogues, etc. are all available in the Museum's Reference Library. |
