Description : | The glove is semi-circular in construction. Both parts of the glove are woven together with a thick leather stitching. Commentaires : | The Catcher's Mitt came from the Veriker family. Soft Ball was a major attraction during this time period and some of the village's oldest families have some link to the soft ball heritage of Nelson. The gloves were given to Timothy McCarthy after the Veriker family moved out of the area and before their residence was demolished to make way for the expanding Nelson Rural School. As the glove clearly bears the imprint of the name, "Frank Hayes" it is easy to identify this glove as one sponsored by the former major league baseball player known as Frankie Hayes. Hayes played baseball up until 1947 and as such these gloves would have been produced in the post Second World War era during Hayes' active years or during his retirement years. Having signed on as a sponsor for the Denkert company, Frank Hayes model - "Em-Jay Model M28", would have been trademarked and sold for commercial use. The object is an example of early 20th century sport equipment manufactured for recreational use, shipped from the United States and sold locally. |
Fonctions : | The Mitt's primary purpose was to function as its namesake entailed and was used whilst playing soft ball in the village of Nelson or on Beaubears Island. |
