Description : | The object is an axe head. The blade portion of the axe is elongated and meets at a right angle at the tip. The handle portion of the object would have been wedged securely with a wooden handle for mobility. The object is made out of solid single piece of iron. |
Commentaires : | The object is a Hudson Bay Company hand forged trading axe which was used extensively to trade with the First Nations Peoples of the Americas for Furs and other resources. The axe would then have been used by the tribe or village that acquired it for everyday woodsman purposes. However, the object could also have been used as a weapon, and then would be referred to as a "tomahawk". From the 1600s to the late 1700s these axes were imported from either England or France, in this case, since the item was found on Beaubears Island it could have been traded to the Mi'Kmaq by the early European settlers in the region (possibly Acadian). These axes would also have been used onboard ships for a number of woodworking purposes including severing of the anchor rope in the event of a crisis. |
Fonctions : | The object was a trade item but would have been used for woodworking. |
