Commentaires : | This object belonged to Mert Carroll, who worked on Beaubears Island during the late 19C on shipbuilding, carpentry, and logging. Murtagh (Mutt) Carroll (b. 1836) was the brother of Annie Carroll, paternal grandmother of Stephen McCarthy. According to Stephen, the chest and tools belonged to his great-uncle, who apparently plied his carpentry trade in the construction of ships. Accordingly, he referred to the chest as a shipbuilder's tool box. It was said that many of the tools within were Murt's own. Some have speculated that he was a finish carpenter, someone employed to do the detail work on an otherwise completed vessel. Upon the death of his father in 1949, Stephen took the tool box into his possession and stored it until 2002. Mert Carroll Synopsis provided by Shawn McCarthy (descendent). |
Fonctions : | The object was used to store various tools used for carpentry, logging or shipbuilding. |
