Commentaires : Moirs was one of Canada's first candy makers. The original company was started in 1815, when a Scottish immigrant, Benjamin Moir, opened up a bakery in Halifax, Nova Scotia. James Moir, the third generation in the business, started experimenting with candy-making in the corner of the bakery and is credited with changing the emphasis of the company from cake-baking to candy-making in 1873. Moirs POT OF GOLD Boxed Chocolate was introduced in 1928 and has been a Canadian favourite ever since. In 1956, a group of Nova Scotia businessmen took control of the company and began extensive modernization. Over a ten-year period, about $10 million was spent on modern production equipment. The company was acquired in 1967 by Nabisco Brands Limited and the bakery business was sold. In 1975, production was moved across the harbour to Dartmouth into a newly built manufacturing facility. On June 29, 1987, Hershey Canada acquired the Nabisco Brands Limited confectionery business which included Moirs and the POT OF GOLD brand. The Pot of Gold box of chocolates is still available today.
