Commentaires : | The earth closet served the same role as the flush toilet or "water closet" in the time before indoor plumbing became widespread. Dry soil or in some cases ashes from a fireplace would be stored in the compartment at the back and then mixed in the compartment in the base. This technique of waste disposal became popular from the middle of the 19th century. The advocates of earth closets, such as Henry Moule, stated from the beginning that they were safer than cesspits and more economical than water closets. This process was comparable to composting. The use of water toilets became the dominant system in North America as the modern design was developed in the 1890's. This earth closet was made by a Saint John, New Brunswick firm, Anderson & Kedey. They were located on Prince William Street. The company appears in a city directory for 1872-73. The two men involved were George Anderson and Robert Kedey. George Anderson was involved in pianos prior to the formation of this company. The company may have only existed for a short period. In later directories George Anderson is still involved in the piano business. Robert Kedey is only listed in the 1872-73 Saint John city directory. |
