| Description : | A grey kerosene lantern. The main body of the lantern is tear drop shaped and enclosed in glass. There are two interlocking metal bands circling the glass. It sits on a tin circular base that has two arms extending up to the lid. Contains a circular lid with a looped handle. There is also a larger metal handle for carrying. |
| Commentaires : | From the last schooner out from East Chezzetcook - The Eliza C built in 1896. It was built by Dennis Conrod and he was the managing owner. It was sold to Captain Dennis Richards and known as a coasting schooner. The last run of the schooner was in 1929 and it was later condemned. This item was donated by Dennis Richards' granddaughter. |
| Fonctions : | The first kerosene lamp was invented in 1853, just seven years after kerosene itself was created. In the early 19th century, gas lighting was beyond the economic reach of most citizens, but by the civil war it became more affordable. By around 1925, most families were able to get electricity and kerosene would take the back seat to this over the next few decades. |
