| Description : | Green wool military uniform jacket. The fit would be suitable for a man of small build, and it sits at the hips. There are five metal buttons running up the main body of the jacket to close it, and it buttons right up to the collar. There are two buttoned-flap deep-bottomed pockets sewn onto the front of the jacket. The pocket on the wearer's left is topped by a pinned-on strip of colours. There is a belt attached to the front bottom helm of the jacket with the buckle sewn close to the wearer's right hip. There are buttoned flaps at the top of both shoulders. The wearer's right-hand sleeve has red patch sewn on with white thread which reads CARLETON & YORK CANADA in blue letters. Below this is sewn a red rectangle. At the bottom near the sleeve hem there is a patch sewn on with a green background and four red chevron arrows pointing upwards. There is a metal button sewn into the sleeve hem. The wearer's left hand sleeve bears an identical CARLETON & YORK CANADA patch and red rectangle patch. However, instead of the red arrow patch there is patch with a green background which has two over-crossed flags: the left flag is entirely blue, while the right flag is white with a horizontal blue line running through its middle. There is an identical button sewn into the sleeve hem. Underneath each armpit there are three small holes sewn into the fabric in a triangular shape. There are two large beige canvas pockets attached to the inside of the jacket. The back of the jacket is pleated. |
| Commentaires : | This uniform jacket belonged to Percy Reginald Trenholm, a former mayor of Sackville and the father of the donor, Charlie Trenholm. According to his Discharge Certificate, Percy enrolled in the Canadian Army on November 4, 1940 in Saint John. His number was G-11026 and he served as a private in the 3rd (New Brunswick) Coast Brigade, Royal Canadian Artillery. It is listed that he served in "Canada North Atlantic Area: United Kingdom: Central Mediterranean Area: Continental Europe." He received the 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. The reason for his discharge is listed as "To return to Civil Life (On Demobilization)." On at the time of his discharge Percy was aged 29 years and 9 months. |
| Fonctions : | This style of Canadian military uniform jacket from World War II is known as a Battle Dress Blouse. Designed by the British, it was being approved for use in Canada in September 1939, and by 1941 it had been issued to the entire overseas army, plus those stationed in Canada. It was characterized by its (unusual at the time) waist-length, a practical decision to allow for movement, its button front including the collar which could be buttoned all the way, belt sewn at the the front waist, breast pockets, and button sleeve closure. It was intended for general use: combat, dress, walking out, work. There are a number of patches on this jacket. Each of the four red chevrons on the jacket represent a complete year of continuous service. The chevrons were to be worn on the right sleeve, pointing upwards. The flag patch was worn by signalmen. Signalmen were responsible for military communications, such as on the radio. Privates could be trained signallers. The red rectangle represented the 1st Canadian Division. The Carleton & York Regiment, whose patch is also seen on this jacket, was part of the 1st Canadian. |
