| Description : | This artefact is a silver Church Lad's Brigade sporting trophy from the early 20th century. It is of a challis style that has been made in two sections which have been soldered together. The trophy fronts a gothic style inscription that reads "C.L.B.C. WRESTELING TOURNAMENT Dec 10th 1920 Lightweight Championship WON BY A Hennebury." The stem of the challis is decorated by a stylised flare in the center, while the base is decorated by a simple roped effect that runs the circumference of the base. |
| Commentaires : | Physical activity and sporting competitions continued to play a major role in Brigade life after the Great War. The recipient of this trophy served in the Newfoundland Regiment during the First World War. Enlisting on 11 September 1914 and given the regimental number of 461, Alexander Hennebury was one of the first five hundred men to embark for training in England. Hennebury embarked with the rest of his regiment on 20 August 1915 for Gallipoli. It was here that he received the first of the wounds listed in his service record when he was shot in the right thigh. He returned to active duty in February of 1916. His second listed injury happened on 17 July 1917 when he was kicked in the knee during an inter company football match. Though such an injury appeared insignificant, it generated much documentation in the form of Report on Accidental or Self Inflicted Injuries that outlined an investigation to ensure that Hennebury did not inflict the injury on himself to evade active service. The report included the sworn statement of Lieutenant C.S. Strong who swore that he "accidentally kicked him in the leg." The report concluded that there was no disciplinary action required. Hennebury went on to distinguish himself later that year by winning the military medal for his actions in ensuring supplies made it to brigade headquarters under heavy fire. Hennebury was demobilised form service in 1920 with the rank of Sergeant. After his demobilization Hennebury, like the other men with whom he served resumed their pre-war activities, which for many included involvement with the CLB. |
