Description : | The blowtorch consists of a bell-shaped, brass canister, welded to the side of which is a metal handle with a wooden grip. The burner head rests on top of the canister. A steel tube " the wick tube " connects the burner head to the canister. A valve on the rear of the head controlled the flow of fuel into the nozzle, while a tap on the top controlled the air pump. A label which is now almost illegible appears to read "Meaford Steel Forge, Meaford, Ontario, Canada." The blowtorch is generally in good condition. There is some rust on the canister, as well as on the burner head. |
Commentaires : | As with many older blowtorches, this model used liquid kerosene as fuel. The blowtorch was operated by pressurizing the fuel with air via the pump. A cotton wick sucked fuel into the burner head, at which point it could be ignited. This was a common design for blowtorches in the mid-twentieth century, though there were notoriously unreliable. The burner head had to be kept at a high temperature, or else the kerosene would not ignite. This particular blowtorch was manufactured in Meaford, Ontario. It's date of production is unknown. |
Fonctions : | This blowtorch was used by George Barfoot of Logy Bay in the mid-twentieth century. |
