Description : | The Scythe consists of a long, curved, wooden shaft attached to a curved iron blade. The blade has rusted with age. Attached to the shaft are two small wooden handles, which were used to hold the scythe. |
Commentaires : | The Scythe was likely homemade, with the blade probably coming from a local forge. It would have been used to mow grass and hay " likely to feed livestock. Residents of the Logy Bay area raised animals both for their own subsistence and for market in St. John's. Farming was an important activity for many Logy Bay families, as they relied on income from selling produce, meat and dairy products in St. John's to supplement income gleaned from the fishery. Hay would have been cut in late summer in order to feed animals during Newfoundland's long winter. |
Fonctions : | This scythe would have been used to cut grass and hay in the Logy Bay area, likely in the early decades of the twentieth century. |
