Description : | The skis consist of two long, narrow pieces of wood. The skis curve slightly upwards at the front. Leather bootstraps in the middle of each ski are brown, and have clearly deteriorated with age. A spring-like metal fastener is attached to the leather strap. The brand name "Harvey E Dodds" is carved into the skis near the bootstraps. |
Commentaires : | Harvey E Dodds Limited was a Canadian manufacturer of sporting goods, based in Montreal in the first half of the twentieth century. Known as "The Ski People," the company sold a large quantity of skis which were widely renowned for their finely crafted skis. The company reached its peak sales in the 1930s and early 1940s, so these skis likely date from that period. Skiing was a popular mode of winter recreation and transportation in twentieth-century Newfoundland. It is thought that these skis may have been purchased from a shop on Water Street in downtown St. John's, at a cost of ten dollars. |
Fonctions : | The skis were used by the wife of Phil Roche of Middle Cove in the mid-twentieth century. |
