Description : | Cast iron sewing machine. Dark finish with traces of green bands, thistles, etc. Faint marking on arm in green: "... Schneider/Hamilton C.W.". Turning arrangement of three cog-wheels (short projection from center wheel) operates machine. Needle present. Bobbin, if any, missing. Band for moving on fabric immobile. Needle mechanism does operate in response to turning wheel. Photo of machine apparently identical to this appears in Brian Jewell's Veteran sewing machines: a collector's guide (South Brunswick: A.S. Barnes & Co., 1975 p.35) Machine is an I.M. Singer lock-stitch machine of 1851: wooden pitman links middle cog-wheel with treadle. Also pictured in Loris S. Fonctions : | Porter and Schneider appear in the Hamilton directories of 1856 and 1858. They were agricultural implement marketers as well as sewing machine dealers/manufacturers. Various sources give Richard Wanzer as first Canadian sewing machine manufacturer, Hamilton, 1860: |
