Description : The tackle is made of an iron portion and a wooden portion. The outer portion is made of iron and it is circular in shape. The iron encases a circular wooden piece. The iron portion is made of two iron bars that run perpendicular to one another around the outer center portion of the wooden circle. The iron pieces terminate at the top of the wood but have a portion that is left open, they do not completely encircle the wood. Each iron piece ends in a small loop. The wood block is completely solid except for 3 holes that are cut completely thru the body of the wood in a triangular formation. The holes are approximately 3 cm by 4cm wide. The wood is very smooth to the touch.
Commentaires : The block and tackle is a system of two or more pulleys with a rope or cable threaded between them, usually to lift or pull heavy loads. This system is especially common on ships where motorized aids are usually not available. A block is a set of pulleys all mounted on a single axle. When rope or line is run though a block or a series of blocks the whole assembly is called a tackle, which is usually a compound machine. The most common arrangement for a block and tackle is to have a block attached to a fixed position (the fixed or standing block) and another block left to move with the load being pulled or lifted. (the moving block) The block and tackle pulley is actually a compound pulley whcih was probably invented by Archimedes.
Fonctions : The iron portion loops at the top of the tackle had rope strung through it. The tackle was part of block and tackle system that was used to move and pull heavy loads.
