Light tan paint over original stain finish. White pine on desk/stand skirt with hardwood (likely sugar maple legs). The slanted hinges on desk top has a writing surface.
Commentaires : The Pickard family settled in the region for some time. There is a letter written from Ireland asking whether his family was affected by the Great Miramichi Fire. The desk was made in the Keswickk area by Moses Pickard Jr. circa 1830. It has remained in the family until acquired by the Keswick Ridge Historical Society. John Pickard came to Rowley, Massachusetts from Rowley, Yorkshier in 1639. He was the sone of a clergyman. The Pickard family were Congregationalists who moved to Maugerville (Upper Sheffield) from Rowley, Massachusetts. The date is unclear, possibly between the mid 1760's until the early 1770's. Moses Pickard the Fourth (1760-1847) arrived in Maugerville in 1763 when he was three. Moses moved to Keswick Ridge in 1806 and built a home in 1838. Moses Married Eleanor (last name unknown). This is the Moses Pickard who possibly built the slant top desk. The simplicity of the piece indicates that an unskilled person could easily pout this together. Slant top desks later developed into having the hinges on bottom providing a writing surface while also allowing access to the contents.
Fonctions : Used by Moses Pickard and his descendants at French Location and Scotch Settlement.
