Description : | A stereoscope with a tin eyepiece padded with mustard-coloured velvet and embellished with engraved work; in the center is a repousse insignia that reads, "SUN SCULPTURE U&U TRADEMARK" with sun rays coming off of it. Spanning from the eyepiece is a tin piece that tapers into a bar of varnished wood that enables the stereoscopic card holder (which consists of a bar of varnished wood with two bent metal loops on each end) to slide on. On the underside of the stereoscope, near the eyepiece, is a cone shaped varnished wood handle that swivels for storing. On the metal bracket that holds the handle is stamped, "MAN'F'D BY UNDERWOOD & UNDERWOOD NEW YORK PATENTED JUNE 11, 1901 FOREIGN PATENTS APPLIED FOR". |
Fonctions : | The stereoscope was first introduced in 1851 at the Crystal Palace Exhibition, England. Its affordability made it one of the most prominent forms of entertainment found in middle class parlours. When looking through its eyepiece, the image presented through the glasses appears to have depth. This occurs when the two nearly identical images placed side by side sit in front of the magnified eyepiece which in turn makes them appear as one. |
