Description : | A rectangular, smoked tanned caribou? suede picture frame with long fringes attached to the upper corners and the bottom of the frame. Stamped on the leather of the frame is, "Caribou Skin/ The Northern lights near Dawson, 1907" as well as a monogram with the letters I, H, L, A. On the reverse is a purple/red silk backing. In the frame is a black and white photographic print coloured in greens, yellows and oranges depicting a steamship pushing a barge on the Yukon River. |
Fonctions : | The way the caribou hide is fashioned into a picture frame using cardstock as backing and embellishing it, with burning designs and text into it as well as attaching long thongs to the edges, is a style that was popular mainly in Dawson City, Yukon in 1907 to 1918. These artworks were sold as souvenirs to Edwardian tourists who visited the north in the early twentieth century. |
